Sworn court-certified English to Italian translations for Italian Authorities

For Italian consulates worldwide, immigration, city halls, academic institutions.

If you're planning to get married, apply for a visa, move, or retire in Tuscany, we can help you ensure that your paperwork is accurate and compliant. We provide a trusted service to individuals and businesses in need of a certified translator in Florence or an Italy–U.S. translation service.

Every detail is handled confidentially, efficiently, and with the utmost accuracy.

To comply with Italian legal requirements, official documents must be translated and sworn before the court according to strict procedural rules. Our service ensures that your sworn court-certified Italian translations ("traduzione asseverata" or "traduzione giurata") meet all the official standards required by Italian courts, consulates, and city halls.

What are Sworn Translations in Italy?

In Italy, certified translations are court-certified and sworn before an Italian court, "traduzione giurata".

We handle the entire process from start to finish, ensuring that your documents are accepted by Italian authorities.

This includes scheduling the court appointment and purchasing all of the required revenue stamps for the sworn certification.

What is Required in Italy?

A sworn court-certified translation for Italy is a bound collection of documents with tax payments in the form of attached revenue stamps consisting of:

1️⃣ The original document (e.g., birth certificate, marriage certificate, diploma, medical or legal record). Italian courts only accept original documents.

2️⃣ The document's apostille. U.S. documents must be apostilled by the issuing authority in the United States before they can be sworn in Italy. An apostille guarantees that the document is lawful internationally. Apostilles bear the date of issue, but do not have an expiry date.

3️⃣ The Italian translation. Sword court-certified translations are carried out by professional legal translators who faithfully mirror the formatting of the original document, including stamps, seals, and handwritten notes.

4️⃣ The sworn court-certification. This sworn statement certifies the accuracy of the translation. It is signed by the translator and sworn before an Italian court official, who seals it.

When do you need a sworn translation?

Sworn, court-certified translations are required for Italian immigration services, such as for visa applications and residency permits, as well as for other Italian government bodies, academic purposes (e.g., academic transcripts and diplomas), and legal matters (e.g., official documents, such as birth or marriage certificates, adoption papers, tax returns, real estate transactions, and business agreements).

We swear to the accuracy and completeness of every translation before the Court of Florence. These court-certified translations are officially accepted by Italian consulates worldwide, Italian universities and academic institutions, public offices, and businesses throughout Italy.

Do you need Italian to English consulate-ready sworn translations?

Italian to English certified translations for U.S. authorities

For UCIS, U.S. agencies and academic institutions.

If you need your Italian documents translated for USCIS, a university, or another U.S. agency, we will ensure that they meet all the necessary American requirements for accuracy and official acceptance.

What is required in the U.S.?

1️⃣ The Italian record (birth certificates, degrees, transcripts, etc.). U.S. institutions generally do not require physical originals. High-quality digital copies (PDF or JPEG) are usually acceptable. However, requirements vary, so we recommend asking the specific institution whether a digital copy is acceptable or if the original document is required.

2️⃣ The English translation. The translation must be an accurate and complete word-for-word rendition of the original document. Our certified English translations preserve the layout and details of the original Italian document, including seals, stamps, signatures, and handwritten notes.

3️⃣ The Certificate of Accuracy. Certified translations for the U.S. must include a certificate of accuracy. It is required by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) and by most academic institutions. This certificate is an affidavit that includes the translator’s signature, full name, address, date, and a statement attesting to his or her competence in translating from the foreign language into English. In the U.S., notarization isn't usually required unless it is specifically requested.

When do you need a certified translation?

A certified translation is required for submissions to the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), for other government bodies, academic institutions (for transcripts and diplomas), and for legal matters (of official documents, such as birth or marriage certificates, and business agreements).

Absolutely. If you’re unsure, just email your document to [email protected] and tell us where it’s going. We’ll recommend the correct format (simple, certified, curt-certified, notarized.).

How long will it take to get the sworn Italian translation of my documents?

The turnaround time for translations varies based on the number of documents to be translated and the availability of court appointments (for sworn translations). Please bear in mind that sworn translations require an appointment in court, which could add a few days to the delivery time. Contact us for a quote and delivery time sending us the documents that you need translated.

Do I need an Apostille for my U.S. documents?

Yes, if you plan to use them in Italy. A Hague Convention Apostille authenticates your U.S. document’s signature and seal, making it legally valid in Italy.

Let our local experts guide you through Italian immigration and bureaucracy and assist you in person at in-office appointments in Tuscany.

Your local allies in Tuscany

Navigating Italian bureaucracy can be overwhelming and confusing, especially if you don't speak Italian fluently. What if you could relocate abroad with the benefit of insider knowledge gained through years of first-hand experience?

We can help you navigate Italian bureaucracy before and after your arrival in Tuscany. We can assist you with everything from getting your visa and residence permit, to filling out official documents and accompany you at in-office appointments in Tuscany, where speaking Italian is crucial.

We've been through it ourselves, and we're here to guide you every step of the way, from navigating the red tape to handling everyday matters. Whether you're already in Tuscany or preparing from abroad, we offer personal, bilingual (English–Italian) support to help you settle in with ease, locally or remotely.

As your Local Insider in Tuscany, we help you handle every step of the process by:

  • filling out forms in Italian, writing official emails, and making phone calls on your behalf,

  • supporting you in real-time with local services and government offices,

  • booking and attending appointments (in person or remotely),

  • interpreting at meetings with landlords, doctors, notaries, and public offices,

  • translating rental contracts, legal paperwork, and medical forms.

Getting your Italian Visa

Whether you’re planning a short-term stay or making Tuscany your new home, our team of certified translators and bilingual relocation assistants can guide you through every step of the process. We will review your visa and immigration documents to ensure they meet all legal requirements, providing certified translations when necessary. Our goal is to make the visa approval process as easy as possible for you.

Short-term stays (less than 90 days)

If you are staying for less than 90 days, no visa is required for tourism, business, or study purposes. However, your passport must be valid for at least three months beyond your planned stay. The upcoming ETIAS system will introduce additional requirements when it launches in late 2026, followed by a six-month grace period and we will ensure that you are fully prepared by then.

Long-term stays (over 90 days)

If you plan to stay more than 90 days, you must apply for a visa at your local Italian consulate at least three months in advance. Common requirements include a valid passport, proof of income, private health insurance for the Schengen Area, and proof of accommodation. We can help you prepare the supporting documents and translations required for your visa application, as well applying for the "Nulla Osta" (no impediment letter) required for work, family reunification, and investment visas.

Getting your Italian residence permit in Tuscany

We guide you through applying for your “Permesso di Soggiorno” (residence permit) and getting your “Codice Fiscale” (similar to a SSN).

You can get your Codice Fiscale from your local Italian consulate or the Questura (immigration office) in the town or city where you are staying. It is required for many things in Italy, including renting an apartment, opening a bank account, setting up utilities, and applying for a residence permit.

After getting your Codice Fiscale, you must apply for your "Permesso di Soggiorno" (residence permit) within eight business days of your arrival. We can help you gather and translate your documents before you leave for Tuscany, as well as help you fill out the necessary forms.

Italy-America Certified Language Services logo

You need the following documents to apply for a residence permit:

  • A copy of each page of your passport and visa.

  • Your Italian Codice Fiscale and four passport-sized photos.

  • Proof of accommodation, such as a hotel booking confirmation, a letter from a host, a lease agreement, or a property deed.

  • Proof of financial means, such as bank statements, tax returns, or pay stubs.

  • Health insurance for the Schengen Area and any specific documents required for your visa type.

  • Completed post office kit, a 16.00 euro revenue stamp and the payment receipt for residence permit fees.

Key steps:

Within eight days of arriving in Italy with your visa, apply for the Permesso di Soggiorno (residence permit) by submitting the "yellow kit" at a post office.
On the day of your appointment, go to the local "Questura" (immigration office) to have your fingerprints taken and to bring your original documents. We can help you fill out the kit, gather your documents, and accompany you to the post office and the Questura. We will support you and assist you with the Italian language so that there are no language barriers.

Hello, I’m Elena Nissen Villoresi, lead translator of Italy-America Certified Language Services.

I was born to an American mother and an Italian father and I was raised in both the US and Italy, giving me a deep connection to both countries. This bilingual, bicultural upbringing shaped not only who I am, but is also the foundation of my work today. I bring more than just fluency in two languages, I understand the mindset, systems, and everyday challenges on both sides of the Atlantic. My work is grounded in accuracy, empathy and cultural understanding.

25+ years of cross-cultural expertise

I began my professional journey in New York City, working as an interpreter, translator, and administrative professional at the Italian Chamber of Commerce, Cassa di Risparmio, and the Italian Trade Commission. After moving to Florence, I joined the American multinational company Richardson Electronics as bilingual executive assistant to the European CEO where I further specialized in corporate legal translation and cross-cultural communication.

Over the years, I have specialized in certified legal translations and served as a bilingual liaison and cultural bridge for clients navigating life between Italy and the U.S. Having crossed borders and adapted to new systems myself, I know firsthand what this means.
